How to Measure Your Brand's Visibility in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews
More and more Google searches end with an AI-written answer instead of a list of links. AI Overviews appear above the usual results, and AI Mode turns search into a conversation. For a business, the question is simple: when Google answers directly, is your brand the one it cites? And how would you even know?
What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are summaries generated by Gemini, Google's AI model, shown at the very top of the results page for some searches. They answer the question directly and cite a handful of sources as links.
They don't appear for every search. They show up mostly for informational questions ("how to choose a CRM for a small team", "what is the difference between SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2"), and less often for brand searches or searches with immediate buying intent.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a conversational search mode, available from Google's homepage and results page. You ask a question as you would ask an assistant, get a written answer, and can keep asking follow-ups. To build its answer, Google runs several searches at once behind the scenes, one for each part of the question, then assembles the result and cites its sources.
What does this change for your traffic?
When the answer sits at the top of the page, some people no longer need to click. Studies in the US and the UK report clear drops in click-through rate on top positions when an AI Overview is shown.
In practice, you may see stable or rising impressions in Google Search Console alongside falling clicks on some queries, without losing any ranking. That is often the sign that an AI answer is responding in place of your page. We explain this in more detail in Why Is Our Traffic Dropping Even Though Our Rankings Haven't Changed?.
There is another side to it: being the source cited in an AI Overview puts you above the first organic result, with Google's implicit endorsement.
How does Google choose which sources to cite?
AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's own index. The pages they cite are usually pages Google can already crawl, understand and trust. What matters:
- SEO fundamentals. A page that is poorly indexed or slow has little chance of being cited. Classic SEO is still the way in.
- Clear, direct answers. A question as the heading, a two or three sentence answer right below it, then the detail. That is a format an AI can reuse without distorting it.
- Coverage of related questions. Because AI Mode splits a question into several searches, a page that also answers the neighboring questions (pricing, timelines, integrations, guarantees) has more chances to be picked.
- Your presence elsewhere. Reviews, directories, industry press and comparison articles: answers also rely on what other sites say about you.
- For local businesses, your Google Business Profile. It remains a major source for searches like "accountant near me" or "best plumber in Austin".
These are the principles of GEO and AEO, which we cover in What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? and What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?.
How do you measure your brand's visibility in Google AI Mode?
Google does not offer a dedicated AI Mode or AI Overviews report in Search Console yet. Impressions and clicks from these answers are mixed in with everything else. To know whether your brand is cited, you have to check it yourself, with a method you can repeat.
- Pick 10 to 20 questions your customers actually ask, worded the way they would ask them, without your brand name: "best payroll software for a 20-person company", "which CRM integrates with HubSpot and Slack".
- Ask them in AI Mode, in a private window and signed out of your Google account, to limit personalization.
- Record three things for each answer: is your brand cited, in what position, and which sources (sites, directories, comparison articles) are linked.
- Repeat every week, with the same questions. Answers vary from one day to the next. The trend over several weeks is what counts, not a single screenshot.
- Cross-check with Search Console. On the queries involved, stable impressions with falling clicks often mean an AI answer is showing above your page.
A spreadsheet is enough to start. Once the number of questions grows, or if you also want to track ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, an AI visibility tool automates these checks and calculates your share of voice against your competitors.
AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT: do you need to track all of them?
Your customers don't only ask Google. Many ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity directly, and those assistants recommend two or three names. The same work helps everywhere: a site that crawlers can read, clear answers, and a presence on third-party sites. But results differ from one assistant to another, and only regular tracking shows where you stand. For a broader method, see How Do I Track My Brand's Visibility Across AI Search Engines?
To measure:
- Google Search Console shows how your impressions and clicks evolve, but without isolating what comes from AI answers.
- An AI visibility tool asks your customers' questions on a schedule and records whether you are cited. Some track AI Overviews and AI Mode directly. Others, like Operato AI, track ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Since Gemini is the model that generates Google's AI answers, it gives a good indication of how Google's AI sees your business, without replacing tracking of the results page itself. We compare the main options in The Best AI Visibility Tools in 2026.
Where should you start this week?
- Find the pages in Search Console whose clicks are falling while impressions and position hold steady.
- On those pages, add a direct answer to the main question at the top of the page.
- Check that AI crawlers can read your site. The free AI Readiness Score checks your robots.txt, your content and your llms.txt file.
- Update your Google Business Profile and your listings in the directories that matter in your industry.
- Ask Google AI Mode and ChatGPT your five most important questions yourself, and note who gets cited. That is your baseline.
FAQ
How do I know if my brand is cited in Google AI Mode? Ask AI Mode the questions your customers would ask, without your brand name, in a private window, and note whether you are cited and which sources appear. Repeat with the same questions every week to follow the trend.
Does Search Console show traffic from AI Mode? Not separately, so far. Impressions and clicks from Google's AI answers are included in the usual numbers, with no dedicated filter.
Is there an AI Overviews tracker? Some AI visibility tools track AI Overviews and AI Mode directly; others focus on assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. You can also track AI Overviews manually with a fixed list of questions and a weekly check, which is enough to get a baseline.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode? AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of standard Google results for some searches. AI Mode is a conversational search mode where you ask questions as you would ask an assistant, and a written answer replaces the list of links.
What is the difference between being cited in AI Mode and in ChatGPT? AI Mode relies on Google's index, so good SEO helps directly. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity rely on their own web searches and on their training data, so the brands they cite can be different. Tracking both gives you the full picture.
How do I get my site into AI Overviews? First make sure Google indexes your pages well. Then give clear, direct answers to your customers' questions, cover the related questions, and get mentioned on other trusted sites. For a local business, a complete Google Business Profile matters a lot.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic? Often, on informational searches: when the answer appears at the top of the page, fewer people click. On the other hand, a page cited in the answer gains visibility above the first result.
Does Operato AI track AI Overviews and AI Mode? Not directly. Operato AI tracks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Since Gemini is the model behind Google's AI answers, it gives a good indication of how Google's AI presents your business.
